11 years ago, Bitcoin (BTC) was used to buy the most expensive pizzas in the world — 10,000 BTC were exchanged for two pizzas worth $41. Today, 10,000 BTC are worth more than $360 million US dollars.
What started as a joke or simple experiment became a memorable day for all bitcoiners worldwide: Bitcoin Pizza Day.
What is Bitcoin Pizza Day?
On May 22, 2010, Laszlo Hanyecz posted on the forum bitcointalk.org that he would pay 10,000 bitcoins for a couple of pizzas. The post read as follows:

_I'll pay 10,000 bitcoins for a couple of pizzas… maybe 2 large ones, so I have some left over for the next day. I like to have leftover pizza to eat later._
_You can make the pizza yourself and bring it to my house or order it from a delivery place, but what I want is for food to be delivered to me in exchange for bitcoins where I don't have to order or prepare it myself. It's like ordering a 'breakfast platter' at a hotel or something like that — they just bring you something to eat and you're happy!_
_I like things like onions, peppers, sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes, pepperoni, etc. Just standard stuff, nothing weird like fish topping or anything like that. I also like regular cheese pizzas which may be cheaper to make or buy._
_If you're interested, let me know and we can work out a deal._
_Thanks,_
_Laszlo_
Source: Original message on [bitcointalk.org](https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=137.0)This post was interpreted as a joke on the forum, since at the time Bitcoin was not yet considered real currency. However, the transaction did take place and someone decided to make the deal — making it the first real-world use of Bitcoin as a payment system.
On May 22, Laszlo Hanyecz confirmed:
_"I just want to report that I successfully traded 10,000 bitcoins for pizza."_The growth of Bitcoin's price
A few months later, the price of bitcoin began to rise significantly, going from being worth a few cents to surpassing the price of the US dollar. That's when some users started mocking the exchange Laszlo Hanyecz had made on bitcointalk.org for how costly it turned out to be.
This event went down in history, becoming a million-dollar purchase. Ten years ago when the transaction was made, the 10,000 Bitcoins were worth approximately $41 US dollars — and today, May 31, 2021, the estimated value is $383 million dollars.
Today, Bitcoin Pizza Day is a worldwide event, and over 10 years Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies have come a long way, proving to everyone that they are here to stay.
The world is increasingly adopting this technology not only as a financial asset but also as a payment method. So Bitcoin Pizza Day is a special day for bitcoiners — we not only remember the purchase of the two most expensive pizzas in history, but also the power and impact that cryptocurrencies have had on the world and their long-term growth potential.
Happy Bitcoin Pizza Day!
